SHEFFIELD

FIRBECK RD.

A long and narrow garden, sandwiched between an access route and ill defined neighbouring garden. Privacy and boundary definition was the first port of call with a new dense hedge, low fence and gate made from waste timber stickers. Marc and Jess wanted flower meadow style planting with a good sized entertaining space leading from the rear kitchen door. Several large concrete sections extended to the adjoining property and down the ginnel from an old garage that once stood there. Hard on the eyes and difficult to traverse but structurally sound. We decided to leave them in situ, after a little prep work they were a solid foundation to build off. Maintaining good drainage to the existing drains was key, checking the falls and cutting some channels allowed water to run freely beneath a mixed limestone, green + red granite aggregate. A simple built in corner bench quietly defines the entertaining area leading to a meandering crazy path through the planting to a floating platform towards the rear of the garden. Constructed around an old apple tree it provides welcome shade and a place to read and relax whilst keeping one eye on a grassed area where their young child and small dog like to play. The rear boundary is extended using gabion baskets filled with leftover rubble, bricks, blocks and waste material found buried during construction. A great habitat for invertebrates and topped with a low trough planter accessible for youngsters to experiment growing herbs and vegetables from seed.

PLANTING

A boundary of beech hedging maintains privacy through the seasons with prairie style planting. A mixture of flowering perennials and ornamental grasses provide the garden with good visual structure, habitat, nectar, seed heads and plenty of interest throughout the year. Deciduous climbers scramble up and across walls and fences whilst an evergreen clematis weaves through a recycled steel mesh panel floating in front of a neighbours pebble dashed garage. Great coverage and an easy place for the clients to hang their nesting boxes.
